Apple pie

An apple pie is a fruit pie in which the principal filling is apples. It generally has shortcrust pastry both above and below the filling; the upper pastry may be solid or latticed. The bottom or pastry base may be baked separately to prevent it from getting soggy. Tarte Tatin is baked with the pastry on top, but this is served the opposite way round with the fruit exposed.

An apple is the round, edible fruit of an apple tree. Fruit trees of the orchard or domestic apple, the most widely grown in the genus, are cultivated worldwide. The tree originated in Central Asia, where its wild ancestor, Malus sieversii, is still found. Apples have been grown for thousands of years in Eurasia before they were introduced to the American continent by European colonists. Apples have cultural significance in many mythologies and religions.
