Hippie Trail

Hippie trail

The hippie trail was an overland journey taken by members of the hippie subculture and others from 1957 to the late 1970s travelling from Europe and West Asia through South Asia via countries such as Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh to Thailand. The hippie trail was a form of alternative tourism, and one of the key elements was travelling as cheaply as possible, mainly to extend the length of time away from home. The term "hippie" became current in the mid-to-late 1960s; "beatnik" was the previous term from the later 1950s.

Hippie

A hippie is a subculture associated with the counterculture of the mid-1960s to early 1970s. It originated as a youth subculture that began in the United States and spread to different countries around the world. The word hippie came from hipster and was used to describe beatniks who moved into New York City's Greenwich Village, San Francisco's Haight-Ashbury district, Los Angeles' Laurel Canyon, and Chicago's Old Town community. The term hippie was used in print by San Francisco writer Michael Fallon, helping popularize use of the term in the media, although the tag was seen elsewhere earlier.

Trail

A trail, also known as a path or track, is a dirt road or a small paved road, usually through an undeveloped natural area, that is designed primarily for use by pedestrians, equestrians and non-motorized vehicles, although occasionally some off-roading motor vehicles may also use it. In the United Kingdom and Ireland, footpath or hiking trail is the preferred term. However, it is sometimes applied to highways in North America. In the United States, the term was historically used to describe the westward expansion trails, which are land routes into or through wildness regions of the American West used by explorers and migrants.
