Wistman's Wood

Wistman's Wood is one of Britain's most famous ancient temperate rainforests and one of only a few remote remaining high-altitude oakwoods on Dartmoor in Devon, England. The first written document to mention Wistman's Wood dates to the 17th century, while more recent tree-ring studies show that individual trees could be many hundreds of years old.

Wood

Wood is a natural, lignocellulosic material derived primarily from the secondary xylem of trees and other woody plants, where it provides mechanical support and in the functional sapwood, conducts water and dissolved minerals. Being a natural material, it is characterized as an organic material – a natural composite of cellulosic fibers that are strong in tension and embedded in a matrix of lignin and hemicelluloses that resists compression.
